Ringworm
Infection
Ringworm is
a common skin disorder otherwise known as “tinea” or “dermatophytosis.” It is
caused by a fungus that can live on skin, surfaces like locker room floors, and
household items like towels, bedding, and clothes.
While there
are multiple forms of ringworm, the most common forms affect:
Ø The skin on the body - Tinea
corporis,
Ø The scalp - Tinea capitis,
Ø The feet - Tinea pedis, or
"athlete's foot",
Ø The groin - Tinea cruris, or
"jock itch".
Ringworm Causes
Ringworm is
more common in unsanitary and crowded places. That's because it can live on
both skin and surfaces like shower floors, and can be transferred by sharing
clothes, sheets, and towels. Even other mammals, including cats and dogs, can
easily transfer ringworm to humans.
Ringworm is
named for its characteristic symptom of a red, elevated, rapidly growing, round
ring-like sore on the skin. The center of the ring may be clear. The sore
itself may be scaly, crusty, or fluid-filled. Itching and pain may accompany
the sore. Each lesion in medical term for an abnormality such as a sore is less
than 5 cm across or about 2 inches and occurs alone or appears as a skin rash
in groups of three or four.
Lesions
commonly are found on the trunk, legs, arms, neck, and face - referred to as
tinea faciei.
Other
symptoms of ringworm on the body include
ü Hair loss,
ü Itchy skin, and
ü Patches of red, scaly, cracked skin.
This type of ringworm does not involve the bearded area, scalp, groin -jock itch, hands, or feet -athlete's foot. These other types of ringworm may have slightly different symptoms:

Ø Scaly,
Ø Itchy,
Ø Red spots on the cheeks, chin, and upper neck.
Ø There may be hair loss.
Ringworm of
the scalp - tinea capitis:

Ø Crusty,
Ø Itchy,

Ø Circular bald spot that may grow or spread into multiple spots.
Ø Hair may become dry and brittle. More common in children.
Ringworm of
the groin – Tinea cruris, "jock itch":
Ø Scaly,
Ø Itchy,
Ø Red spots on the inner skin of the thighs.
Ringworm of
the feet Tinea pedis, "athlete's foot":
Ø Red,
Ø Swollen,

of the feet.
